Nordic focus on oceans
The sea is at the heart of Nordic cooperation. For centuries the Nordic peoples have been inspired by the challenges of the oceans and seas around them. With their closely interwoven histories as coastal and seafaring peoples, the Nordic countries continue to develop new technologies and adapt old ones to provide sustainable produce from the sea, to maintain and enhance their economies through marine innovation and global trade. The sea is a constant source of artistic and cultural inspiration, a wealth of economic opportunities and the major link with the global community.
Seas the Future will provide a high level political forum from which to examine the broader, cross-cutting issues and challenges facing coastal nations and communities today in the Nordic and North Atlantic region when it comes to ensuring sustainable use of the oceans and seas around us. Focussing on the value of the ocean’s ecosystem services, the Conference will examine how best to stimulate knowledge sharing, new initiatives and partnerships based on sustainable utilisation of the seas, as well as to promote a better coordinated regional approach to oceans issues in relevant global processes. Key focus areas for discussion will include:
· the contribution of sustainable fisheries to global food security
· integrated management of marine resources and the marine environment
· marine-based solutions to climate and energy challenges
· trends & future prospects for safe and sustainable international maritime transport in northern seas
The purpose of Seas the Future is to contribute to an on-going process through Nordic cooperation to promote joint efforts and regional coordination for sustainable development, both between the Nordic countries and with their neighbours in adjacent regions in the North Atlantic, Arctic and the European Union.
